About Our Region
Sandstone is a city of about 1,600 people in Pine County, a growing region of Minnesota north of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The community was named for the quarries in the bluffs along the Kettle River. The average age in Sandstone, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, is 41.4 years.
Sandstone calls itself "Gateway to the North – Where the Prairie Meets the Forest."
Sandstone is near the northern terminus of the historic Minnesota St. Croix Scenic Byway, which extends 124 miles through the heart of the St. Croix River Valley. You can bike the nearby Willard Munger State Trail, camp in Banning State Park and hunt in the 2,045-acre Sandstone National Wildlife Refuge.
Sandstone is near Interstate 35, a north-south freeway that begins in Laredo, Texas, and ends in Duluth, Minn., about an hour away.
